Admissions Requirements

Applicants must meet the admissions requirements listed below:

I. Academic Admission Requirements

1. Successful completion of the following 18 required university transfer (UT) credits (note 2), with a minimum grade of C+ in each course 

2. Practical Nursing (PN) Diploma OR

    Practical Nurse Certificate with Health Authority upgrade AND each of the following additional 9 University Transferable (UT) credits with a minimum grade of C+ in each of the courses (note 4):

  • UT ENGL elective
  • BIOL 2200
  • 3 credits UT elective

3. Current Practical Nurse license with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

4. Official transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions attended must be submitted directly to Â鶹ÊÓƵ. Failure to do so may result in the application being denied, and/or the student being withdrawn from the program.

5. An attestation letter from the institution that granted the Practical Nursing Diploma or Practical Nurse Certificate with Health Authority upgrade. The letter must indicate if any transfer credit was granted by the institution and used towards the diploma or certificate, along with a listing of those courses. The letter must also state which (if any) courses on the transcript were NOT used to fulfill the requirements of the diploma or certificate (note 5)

Notes:

  1. Some courses listed in each category have prerequisites. Please check each course in the College Catalogue prior to registration.
  2. A university transfer (UT) course is a course that transfers to one of the 5 Research Universities - SFU, UBCO, UBCV, UNBC or UVIC according to the BC Transfer Guide.
  3. BIOL 1109 can be used as a substitution for BIOL 1103 and BIOL 1209 can be used as a substitution for BIOL 1203.
  4. Practical Nurse Certificate holders with Health Authority upgrade must have a minimum of 27 unduplicated university transfer credits.
  5. Courses used towards a student's previous diploma/certificate may not be duplicated or used towards the BSPN Degree.
  6. This is considered a part-time program.

II. Prerequisites for Clinical Practice Education

1. Immunizations - A current record of immunizations must be provided. Applicants must obtain all immunizations mandated by the Health Authorities or Public Health orders to be permitted access to clinical sites. This is a prerequisite for nursing practice courses in the BSPNUR_L program. All costs related to required immunizations and/or testing are the responsibility of the applicant.

Curriculum Framework

Graduation Requirements 

  • Successful completion of 120.50 credits, which includes the credits used for program admission and an additional 45 credits of coursework.
  • At least 45 upper level (3000-4000) credits.
  • A minimum of 40% (48 credits) of all coursework completed at Â鶹ÊÓƵ.
  • Minimum of: 
    • C+ in all credit courses (including associate courses)
    • Mastery in preceptorship course.
  • A minimum program GPA of 2.33.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Time limit to complete the program graduation requirements: 7 years. Any courses completed outside of that time limit will not be usable. Students may seek the permission of the Department/Program to complete a credential outside the approved time limits.
